This weekend, as we were having breakfast, the Bee Gees’ 1977 disco song “Stayin’ Alive” was playing, and it reminded us that this should be our first and foremost concern every single day of the rest of our lives, as we keep on climbing the ladder of time.
As a result, my wife and I decided on the spot to make it our daily anthem for as long as we are capable of breathing. I’ve always liked the Australian group since I listened to their Massachusetts hit for the first time during my 16 month military service in the French Air Force.
The lyrics of Stayin’ Alive, like those of the disco tradition, may not be high literature, but it had a cultural impact that transcended its simple lyrics, with things like the celebration of life and the repeated "stayin' alive" admonition, stressing a primal, survival instinct.
There was also the resilience aspect of past hardships ("been kicked around since I was born") and the need to persevere. Finally, dance stands as an escape, that in that song is a metaphor for finding joy and expressing ourselves no matter how bad times are…
Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive Ah, ha, ha, ha,
Stayin' alive, stayin' alive Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive (hey)
